Own the largest circulation coin in British history - the Cartwheel Twopenny!
This is a unique opportunity to own Britain’s largest ever circulation coin – the Cartwheel Twopenny Coin.
The 1797 one penny and two pence were issued as part of an attempt to restore confidence in British currency, therefore the intrinsic value of the metal plus an allowance for the cost of production was made equal to the nominal value of the coin. Their high metal content made these coins significantly heavier and larger than other circulating coinage struck before or since.
The combination of their weight, size, and the flat rim that ran around the outside give them the nickname ‘Cartwheels’. Because of their cumbersome size, they became unpopular with the public.
Three important numismatic firsts
As well as being the heaviest and largest coin issued to circulation, the Cartwheel Twopenny (along with the Cartwheel Penny) was the first coin ever to be struck by steam power in Britain, at the Soho Mint.
Importantly it was also the first coin to be struck with Britannia holding a trident as opposed to a spear on the reverse – an iconic symbol that remains on our coinage to this day.
A limited number available!
However, as they were struck for just one year only the Cartwheel Twopenny is also very difficult to source. Many of these coins have been melted down for their precious metal over the years, so the numbers available for collectors are minimal. We have a limited number of coins available for UK collectors and they're expected to sell fast.
So you'll need to be quick if you want to add one to your collection now.
Your ‘Cartwheel’ two pence will arrive protected in tamper proof capsules with a deluxe presentation case and an accompanying Certificate of Authenticity.
