On the night of 23rd September 1940, a German bombing raid destroyed a large section of what was then The Royal Mint in London.

The government had taken earlier precautions and moved some of the minting presses to Buckinghamshire - Pinewood Studios in fact.

They carried on striking coins throughout the war, and coins struck their now have a real collector rarity value.

Coins like the 1944 Threepennies. Or Thrupenny bits as they would have been called back then.
